Infrastructure

Ireland has major deficits in public infrastructure due to underfunding, short-term planning, and a lack of vision over many years. This undermines both economic competitiveness and quality of life. As the heart of Ireland’s economy and its only conurbation of international scale, the GDA is of paramount importance to Ireland’s economic success and to the achievement of its social goals.

New approaches are required to ensure long-term planning, coordination with spatial and urban policy, adequate funding, and a transparent prioritisation and decision-making process on capital projects.  Capital investment often involves long lead-in times and is vulnerable to the tendency to cut public expenditure in times of recession. With this in mind, Dublin Chamber would particularly welcome the development of a strategy to earmark and secure funds at an earlier stage.

Dublin Chamber argues for a new approach to capital expenditure and Ireland’s medium-to-long-term infrastructural needs. The Chamber advocates for priorities for resource allocation for the remaining years of the existing plan, with the aims of strengthening Ireland’s position in the face Brexit and improving quality of life.
